In the 1890s, the Oblates established a landmark printing press within the premises of St. Vincent’s Home in Maggona. This facility served a vital dual purpose, functioning as the driving engine for the vernacular Catholic press in Sri Lanka—printing numerous books, sacred prayer manuals, and the renowned “Bhakthi Prabodhanaya” magazine—while also serving as a premier vocational training ground for underprivileged youth.
A New Chapter on Historic Grounds
On July 10, 2026, the iconic St. Vincent’s Press was given a vibrant new identity and purpose as it officially opened its doors as a conference hall. On that momentous day, the venue was solemnly blessed and inaugurated by Rev. Fr. Roshan Silva, OMI, Provincial of the Colombo Province, amidst the graceful presence of many Oblates.
Honoring Two Pillars of Legacy
The newly established conference hall is dedicated to the cherished memory and outstanding legacy of two “giant” Oblates who contributed enormously to this hallowed institute.
In their honor, the facility is proudly named the “Fr. Camillus Fernando, OMI & Bro. John Gilbert, OMI Memorial Hall”.
- Rev. Fr. John Camillus Fernando, OMI: He was a former Managing Director of St. Vincent’s Home who served in that capacity for three distinct terms (1979–1983, 1985–1989, and finally 1997–2001). He was a visionary leader and devoted shepherd whose wise guidance, spiritual stewardship, and compassionate heart laid an enduring foundation for the home.
- Rev. Bro. John Gilbert Pullenayagam, OMI: He was the first Oblate Brother to serve as both the Managing Director and Superior of the Home. However, he is most affectionately remembered as the steadfast caretaker of the printing press for many years. He was an untiring servant whose dedicated craftsmanship, perseverance, and selfless labor elevated the printing ministry and mission of St. Vincent’s Press.
To both remarkable leaders, who now enjoy eternal rest, these scriptural words ring true: “Well done, good and faithful servant; enter into the joy of your Lord” (Matthew 25:21).
Inaugural Events and Heartfelt Gratitude
The historic first event hosted within the Memorial Hall is the Annual Retreat of the Oblates in the Colombo Province, conducted by Fr. Dhanushka Fernando, OMI. It was deeply fitting that the Oblates participating in the retreat were present to witness this milestone occasion.
The realization of this visionary venture is a testament to unwavering dedication and teamwork. Primary credit for this success goes to Fr. Jude Saparamadu, OMI, the present Managing Director and Superior of St. Vincent’s Home; Fr. Shalinda Jude, OMI, the former Bursar; and Fr. Chamika Sudarshana, OMI, the present Bursar, for the enormous efforts they put forward to bring this dream to fruition.
