St. Vincent’s Home is in Transition St. Vincent’s Home has a long history of providing services to children since our founding in Tacony in 1855. Over time we have evolved to meet the changing needs of children – initially German immigrants, later youths orphaned by wars, toddlers abused or neglected by their parents, presently adolescent girls and young moms and their babies – in need of health and human services. St. Vincent’s Home is evolving again. By June 30, 2008, St. Vincent’s Home will complete a transition from a campus residential facility model to one providing services through community-based group homes. We will continue to serve adolescent girls, some of whom are pregnant or have babies, in community settings, helping them to grow and to learn in locations close to their families. Why this change is necessary The decision to transition from the campus model at St. Vincent’s Home to one organized by community-based group homes is necessary to better align the services we provide with the preferences of government funders and referral sources. Our approach is also in line with national trends to provide outside-the-home placement for children only when necessary and in locations close to their families. Where will we go? We are currently in the process of obtaining community approvals for suitable group home locations. No decisions have been made on an alternate use for the Milnor Street campus in Tacony. We will be working with the Archdiocese of Philadelphia and other interested parties to determine what will be done with the property. If there is to be a disposition of property, all proceeds will go exclusively to St. Vincent’s to help sustain our mission of caring for dependent, “at-risk” children and their families. We will keep you informed as this transition unfolds. You will find more details about St. Vincent’s transition in our news release and in the FAQs. Frequently Asked Questions
